Majster Pavol (1455 - ?1530, Master Paul), considered the greatest medieval artist of Slovakia, lived for almost four decades in the creative atmosphere of Levoca. He was invited here around 1500 by the Thurzo family to lead the local-wood carving and painting workshop, whereupon he developed his exceptional talents under the tuition of masters of Nuremberg and Krakow. The exceptional work of Master Pavol is the outstanding wood-carving ornamentation of the Late-Gothic main altar of Levoca's St. Jacub church. Three main altar panels depicting the Madonna with child, St. Jacub and St. Jan Apostle are the monumental pieces, and it is alleged that he includes his self-portrait among the twelve statues of the Apostles in a wonderful composition of the Last Supper. However, Majster Pavol was not only a craftsman of genius but also a good tradesman and a respectable citizen of Levoca. The last record about him was found in the tax list of the citizens of Levoca of 1537.
Duration of the exhibition organized by Historical Museum: April 8 - August 31, 2004.
