Preview from the book

The mosaic of Peter Dvorsky´s life is not without its curiosities. An unforgettable example was Peter´s second appearance at the Verona Arena. The first of the four performances of la Boheme fell away below the expectations of all of the participants, who included Raina Kabajvanska in te role of Mimi, and conductor Anton Guadagno. During the festival all manner of thing happened...

"The atmosphere at rehearsals was congenial and everything was ready for premiere. The conductor was satisfied and we were confident that all would go well. We were already accustomed to the fact that during a performance at Verona a cat might howl from time to time, or a child the third row begin to cry. We were already for anything, and yet... We arrive for the performance, the auditorium is full, and then we see no stage-set. The stage-hands are on strike, someone explains. The audience begins to boo. We have to make a decision. Shall we cancel the performance and give people their money, or shall we perform without the set. We decide to sing without costumes and without scenery. An our success is as great as any in recent memory..."
