From Summary:

Folk costumes once belonged to the most remarkable attributes of the Slovak folk culture - the costumes of the folk living in picturesque villages and securing their subsistence in agriculture, cattle- and sheep-breeding, and in lumbering. First notes mentioning folk costumes on our territory can be traced in documents dated from the late l8th century onwards in books of travels, and in geographic, topographic, ethnographic and other kinds of literature, up to the more recent and more numerous studies brought up by ethnographic surveys from the late l9th and the early 20th centuries. However, to get a general and complex picture and a complete review of the kunsthistoric development of the Slovak folk costumes, their typology and regional variations, one thing was missing - the systematic scientific research. Namely the research into the stylistic features, technologic, photographic or sketched documentation, the archive sources, not speaking about the "blank spots" (the not surveyed areas) on the map of Slovakia. The first published study on the Slovak folk costumes, with respect to their regional specificities (I:. Reichlova-Kuchanlsova, Dejiny kroja) was edited in 1941, and it reflected the level of the respective research of that time.
